My cat`s meow has become really screechy of late - it is like she has lost her voice. I spoke to a friend tonight and her cat has the same. Could there be some sort of catty virus going around? Has anyone else any experience of this?

My cat comes back from the cattery holiday with a different voice - sort of 3-pack-a-day growly meow.
Perhaps yours has just been listening to some other moggies and is as easily influenced as mine.

Yes, my cat comes back from the cattery with a hoarse voice - I have always put it down to the fact that she has meowed so much that she has worn her voice down. I`m not sure why she is like this at home though.

Tony - I did wonder if she had a sore throat. Maybe she has - you wouldn`t know would you as they can`t tell you. She had a virus in September (I think she caught it in the cattery) and had an antibiotic jab which seemed to sort her out. I`m not sure that she would have another virus so soon but who knows? Pets are a worry.
Could be a virus, maybe a check up at the vets. I'd bet that the vet would prescribe antibiotics.
I know that thyroid problems can cause voice changes. I am a bit hazy on specifics.

Frankie's Asthma causes the odd coughing fit. I go into complete panic mode and can make myself ill. So when I am being sick or hyperventilating he is feeling better and stuffing his face.

wolf - she had her operation for hyperthyroidism in September so that is not an issue now. She seems well in herself but I just wondered why she can`t Meow now.

Oh dear: that sounds a little excessive.
My little cat's meow sounds like a squeaky floorboard.
You should all thing yourselves lucky, whatever sort of meow you get. My girl cat who died at 20, used to give a silent meow at 18 years of age and also stopped purring. Things just ain't right with the world when you have a silent cat. I found it profoundly sad. There's something so lovely about the deep deep purr of a happy and contented cat.
