We have not had our feeders up and running for the last six weeks as we are trying to deter the local pigeon/dove population from feeding in our garden and roosting under our solar panels. I have missed all my little feathered friends, though. The gold finches, chaffinches, long tailed tits, blue and great tits, coal tits, etc.etc.
We have had our gutters cleaned and all the pigeon poo removed, what a stink, and so I decided to put out just two feeders this evening. I have just done that, come in, sat down here and already the goldfinches are back.
I'm similar to you Tilly; I've stopped feeding from the window feeder because of the magpies and from the pole in the garden because of the squirrels. There must be something out there just for the little 'uns.
The feeder Tony has just kindly posted, well, the squirrels will just sit there all day munching away.
Very disheartening.
I pretty much only get goldfinches, but I get a lot of them. There's sometimes the odd chaffinch or blackbird following them and always a big fat pigeon and two collared doves.
Over the years I have spent a small fortune on squirrel proof bird feeders. They aren't. :(
Regarding the pigeons/doves/starlings - no matter what you do to encourage small birds to your feeders and bird tables they will drop seeds and food which brings in the pigeons/doves/starlings. You just can't beat them.
