I don't agree with crating dogs for behavioural issues - you would be better spending money on training the dog to stop the chewing in the first place.

I also note that you decided against all the advice you were given regarding a second dog!
Well said Islay.
Has DD said this is a second dog? Reading his post it is the original chewing chihuahua
If its the same dog my answer still remains the same - training not crating!
Is this the dog who chews in the daytime when left alone? So is she REALLY only going to be in the crate at night?
I am with Islay. Adult dogs chew because they are stressed. My guess is that this little girl is stressed because she is left alone too long.....Stop the stress and the chewing will stop.
I have never been a fan of dog crates, they can be misused and the dog suffers.
hereIam, they have their uses. Some dogs love them as a den. I had one for mine when they were puppies and taught then to be in there while I did things like vaccuum or shower as I was on my own with them. As they got older and didn’t need to be watched all the time, I took the door off but they never liked to sleep in there or be in there so we put it away. They still travel in one in the car.
Probably woofgang, but they can still be misused as I have seen on tv programmes such as dog rescuers and it's heartbreaking.
sorry for digressing diesel - if I SOMEDAY got to Cornwall - do I need to put Maxie in a cage for travelling - how would i know his size. sorry d
Cover the cage with a blanket so the dog feels secure.
Jennyjoan, you do not need to put maxie in a crate if you are travelling in your car - you can either (if you have a hatchback) put him in the boot with the correct guard up, or get the correct harness and secure him with the seatbelt.

Tambo - the dog needs training not covering up!
Also it should be pointed out that trying to introduce an adult dog to a crate may cause extra stress to the dog!
Do you train your dog all night is.lslay? Give dd a break, fgs
No I train my dogs as soon as they start showing any destruction trates!
Islay your dogs, would that be Colin and Jess ?
No as I have said before my dogs are Sam and Ben!
Really !!!!!!
Really!
Once dogs have grown up, if they have been brought up properly and have happy lives, they don’t destroy. If a dog destroys when left alone, its not happy. If you put it in a crate, it doesn’t make it happier. Islay you can’t train a dog to be happy any more than you can train a person to be happy
sorry I forgot. JJ, for travelling the crate needs to be big enough for the dog to stand up, sit up, lie down at full stretch and generally move about. It also needs to fit quite snugly in the car or be fastened in so it doesn’t slide around. I prefer a crate to a dog guard because it gives me more control over getting the dogs in and out of the car, there is no risk of accidentally catching a paw or tail with the back door and I can sit in carparks with the windows and back door open to keep the car cooler. I can also use part of the car back for storage and put things like food shopping in without the dogs being able to help themselves.
