House Spiders
41 Answers
I moved into this house 3 years ago and up until now I've had no spiders at all in the house in this August/September period, for which I have been really grateful, as I really don't like them. But suddenly I've got some monsters in the house. The other evening I had 3 in the living room - 2 average size, and one monster. The big one was being attacked by a smaller one, at least that's what it looked like. Is the reason they're back this year because I'm not cleaning enough? Is there anything I can do to discourage them? I know they do a lot of good, but the big ones are so scary. Can anyone help this gibbering arachnaphobe please?

I do sympathise as they truly terrify me. I saw that in the DM yesterday and couldn't look at it because of the pictures. Firstly they come inside to mate somewhere warm, that could be what you saw. As a lifelong phobe I'd say conkers don't work, keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible. I put ant powder in the recesses of external doors and that seems to help. Don't believe it if a poster comes on here, as they do every year, and tells you the big ones are in your house all year but you don't see them. They are coming in from outside.
They don't like lemon so we polish with lemon furniture polish (when we do lol) and get very few considering our house is a rambling and ancient old pile and we are not great lovers of housework. If we spot one we drop a glass over him and slide some paper underneath and evict him a long way away form the house in one of the outbuildings.
It's not really simple if you have a real fear, I can't go near them even to kill them - if I'm alone and just have to do it then I'm in a cold sweat, weepy and in a state for some hours. This time of year I'm constantly on edge in the evenings. If my husband is away I go to bed in the dark in case I see one.
Like any fear, Prudie. I live in fear of my cat bringing in mice or birds. It's not the animals I fear, it's in case my cat has injured them.
My cat can open the living room door and one time I heard he had something so sat with my back against that door for over an hour before I got the bottle to check.
There was a dead mouse he'd kindly left in my sons shoe!
