Why do Jack Russell terriers sometimes walk on three legs, taking one fo their rear ones off the ground?

It's very common and there's lots of speculation but not much real explanation.
My friend once had a chihauaha (spelling?) that did this all the time, lovely little dog she was.
Its quite a common thing, I have had it with Jack Russells and I had a Westie that done the same.
I had two jacks that did that, according to my vet their “knee” dislocates for a while, does no harm
'Patella luxation' seems to be the favoured theory.
