Wobbly Lump Inside My Neck, At The Back. Other Neck Issues
18 Answers
I have had neck problems for a long time.
my neck has a bump at the base of the neck known as a 'dowagers hump'
I have hypermobility, and i am starting to suspect i may have EDS
about 12 years ago, a physiotherapist told me my neck moved about inside like it was a broken neck ... because of the hypermobility
i have to stretch my neck a lot - it kind of clicks a few time and 'telescopes upwards a bit.
if i dont do this - i can hear the bones of my neck scraping each other ...
Its often sore and annoying
and i do intend to see a doc soon
However today i noticed a moveable lump appears at the base of my neck at the back, whenever i tilt my head back
when my head is up, it cant be felt, as there is a kind of 'muscle' there, but if i lean back a bit, relaxing that muscle - a lump the size of a large grape pops out!
it wiggles about and i can push it right back in, but it pops out again as soon as i move my finger.
and i cant feel anything at all - no pain, or weird sensation or anything
im pretty sure my neck is a weird shape and not as it should be - but ive never noticed this before
you cant see it, only feel it
what could this be? is this normal for necks?
or is its something to do with my hypermobility or just because its a bent neck?
or could it be a slipped disk in my neck? but arent they agony?
there is often no pain or ache in my neck at all, then other times its really sore.
any ideas?
thanks

thanks, but it is neither of those - it is not on my skin or under it it is inside my neck.
it is deep inside it
it is not sore, you cannot see it and only feel it when you press hard and when i tilt my head back - it pops out then - but you still couldnt see it, only feel it
it disappears completely when my head is straight - cant even feel part of it.
it is hard to describe - but if it was just a cyst etc i would not have asked

ok thanks - so is this likely to have been there all my life or a new thing?
ive never noticed it, but then its not noticeable - i only discovered it because i have been trying to make more of an effort on my neck posture - trying to straighten the curve and excercise it for support
could this lump be the reason my neck is like this? like its pushed my neck forward?
or is it just one of those random things?

I doubt whether you have had it all your life, probably for the last decade or so...just a guess.
If anything, I think it may be secondary to your neck problem as your neck symptoms do appear the be the result of wear and tear.
I would guess that in excess of 70% of the over 65's would hear grating and crunching in their necks on forcing their head back and then, in that position, moving it from side to side.

thanks all
i am 46
however i was diagnosed with wear and tear at the base of my spine when i was 15 ...
my neck has crunched probably from around my teens, heard it descibed as like broken biscuits -
i put it down to my hypermobility, which seems to mainly affect my neck hips and spine
this newish noise and feeling though - i would best describe it as the feeling of 2 unglazed ceramic pieces scraping together - you know the ring of unglazed area on the base of plates and cups etc
or the back of a tile
or 2 pumice stones
the sound and feeling is very noticeable when i have earplugs in - its not a crunch, its a smooth-ish scrape
the only way to stop the smooth scraping is to either click my neck upwards, or use a neck brace to lift my head
that is what is making me wonder if the lump is supposed to be in between whatever is making that noise - my gut feeling is that it is bone rather than cartilage that is scraping
as i said, my physio told me my neck had abnormal movement - like that of a broken neck
