Dog Keeps Licking Top Of His Paw

My dog has started licking the top of his paw, we tried to look at it, but he goes beserk, so we borrowed a muzzle, and managed to feel round it, cannot feel anything i.e thorn etc, his paw is fine underneath and he is walking ok, will take to vets if he keeps licking it, but just wondered if any ideas on what to do in the meantime.

Wondering if you felt between his toes when you had him muzzled. Grass seeds, though small, can be very painful and difficult to detect
