Rehoming Cats

Can anyone advise what to do with two cats which an elderly aunt has been feeding but may belong to someone else. She has just gone into a care home and we have been leaving food out but cant go on doing so. We need someone to scan them in case they do have a registered owner. Who best to contact?

Or RSPCA, Cats Protection League. The vet might charge.

Perhaps contact Cats Protection for advice? Or, if you are able to take them to a vet they could be scanned there.

It might also be worth leafleting neighbouring properties with photos of them in case they haven’t been chipped but do have another home.

It is possible that they are homeless cats if so the Cats Protection may continue to feed them.

Cats are devious little things and it could be that your aunt was feeding cats who actually have homes.

My vet's surgery normally charges a fortune just to walk through the door but they'll still scan stray cats free of charge. (They scanned this guy for me when he moved in with me for a while, before vanishing again, a couple of years ago: https://ukcatlover.rajce.idnes.cz/Silber/#P3111473.jpg ).

My first port of call would be to ask all the neighbours before you ring people or cart them off to vets. There is certainly a chance they live in a good home - several of my neighbours' cats would hang round my house if I fed them regularly (I suspect my own cats might do the same, they have no shame nor loyalty!).

a chip to scan a cat seems cheap to me....how about giving the vet a portion of fish too?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Turns out one cat is chipped to a neighbour who thought the old lady had stolen the cat by feeding it! The other cat is feral and feeds wherever it can. Food has been left with next door just in case it returns.
