I have kept many species of starfish in my tropical marine reef aquarium.
They are reef grazers and will move over an area like a sheep grazing on algea and other small meaty particles.
As algea grows with such abundance on the reef, they are never far from food.
There are some carnivorous stars too and they find food by using scent...ie smelling their food.
