I think it is because some cats fish. I would think wiith most cats they discover fish from humans. They obviously enjoy the taste like we do.

In olden times, house animals were fed scraps and leftovers. I think this is where the cats eating fish came from.

Turkish cats swim, and eat fish, but in the wild most wildcats in Europe would eat small rodents and birds, i.e. meat and poultry, rather than fish.

My dogs like chocolate, bananas and grapes but have never been to the supermarket or been abroad - I've never given them enough pocket money!

Dannydingbat --- PLEASE PLEASE do not feed your dog chocolate!!!!!!! While he may like it, it is a known fact that chocolate can be and usually is FATAL to most dogs and cats....

Also: Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. As little as a single serving of raisins can kill him. If the dog doesn't eat enough at one time to be fatal, he can be severely damaged by eating just a few grapes or raisins regularly.

Thanks for the advice but I know already about the business of dogs and what their systems can cope with. The point is, we do not feed them chocolate and grapes, but they like them and they steal them, have done since they were puppies. If a rogue grape falls on the floor, they are there, they've even been known to pull the Christmas tree down to get at the chocolate santas on it. When you come in from shopping and put tons of carrier bags down while you unload the car, guess what they manage to find before you remember to be careful? The fact that they are both dachshunds now in their 17th years and look about half that age causes me to think that their systems aren't doing too badly. Thanks for your concern.
