I think it depends on the thirf, if theyre part of a group, well organised, the sort who cut the chips out theyre after pedigree to breed or sell as they get more money. The more opportunist type will take anything in the hooes of making a quick buck. It is dreadful, families and older people and children especially are distraught at losing a family member.

The main target is kenneled dogs, often spaniels or labradors which are not only easy to access as their kennels are often left unattended overnight but they are friendly when approached. You only need to look at DogLost and see just how many dogs are listed as missing or stolen each day - it is frightening. Thieves are also targetting people exercising dogs, using whistles to entice them and in some cases actually attacking owners to snatch them or breaking into cars. Yet people are still leaving dogs tied up outside shops! The sanctions for dog theft are totally inadequate, identifying the crime as the same level as stealing a mobile phone or laptop. Sir Ian Duncan Smith is pushing for suitable punishments to be dished out to those who perpetrate this despicable crime.
