We have one that comes into the front garden. We leave out food, haven't seen the hedgehog, just his 'calling card'. We rescued a young, pregnant female last year. She was out in broad daylight trying to make a nest in the border. We took her to a rescue where she eventually had her babies, they kept them all over winter.

Sadly, there aren't nearly as many hedgehogs around as that map might initially seem to suggest. It seems to have been compiled over a large number of years, with all sightings (including some very historic ones) included. Clicking on 'Filters' and then using 'Filter by Year' suggests that nearly all the sightings shown there are actually from several years ago :(
(It's also unfortunate that the symbols shown in the key don't seem to match those shown on the map).

It's got some value, LB, but it needs to be used with caution. It's unfortunate that the map might suggest that hedgehog communities are thriving around the country, when actually the opposite is true.
I've lived here thirty years. I used to hear hedgehogs rustling away in my garden, and in other people's gardens as I walked to the shops, every evening. I've had hedgehogs eating out of my cats bowls on my front doorstep, even at the same time that there's been a cat eating there too. Sadly though, I've not seen or heard a single hedgehog around here for over a decade :(

Good for you Roo.
Chris I had them last year, the most I saw together was three but there may have been more. It was the first time ever in my garden. I bought a Trail camera to see what was going on. This year as yet, nothing. The roads around me are back to being very busy again so I expect that has a lot to do with it. My daughter saw one walking in the road by us last week and nearly hit it. Really worrying. I've bought a hedgehog house and got their food ready for them so living in hope.

That one's the biggest for a reason isn't it ff LOL.
Lucky you. I have at least two foxes coming into my garden every night so my hhogs might not come back at all this year. I see the vixen and another with a white tip on its tail on my Trail camera and they wander in and out until 3-4am. Last year the vixen on her own would come into the garden while the hogs were eating and eat out of the same dish as them at the same time. Amazing.
