Cavalier King Charles Spaniels- Malting
Hi,
Having always grown up with a boxer dog I now live with my boyriend and I really really would like a pet dog. Having researched and taken on board my lifestyle, a Cavalier King Charles would be best.
My boyfriend is only put off by the fact that he says dogs smell and they malt a lot. I know labradors do especially.
Does any body know if Cavi's are particularly smelly or how badly they malt? I need some back up now or he's going to change his mind!
Thanks

As for being smelly, any dog only gets as smelly as you let him. Good grooming, an occasional bath & clean bedding will keep him environmentally friendly! However, cavs are very clingy, (I've met other owners) they love company & to be constantly at your feet or on your knee. Hopefully you don't intend leaving him/her alone for long anyway. They can also be rather exciteable & you can never be sure that you won't get a daft one! They love children.
Check the Internet for CKCS. Here is a website that let's you know what to ask and what genetic defects they (breeders) need to test for

and a club you might want to check out
and just an FYI the spelling is actually: Molt or you can say sheds, ( from the Merriam Webster Dictionary) unless over in England your english is different... :)
I've never had a "daft" dog to train just the owner. Any dog you get should be socialized as much as possible with 100 different things: sounds, smells, places, people and dogs. Before they are 5 months old if possible.
A reputable trainer will explain how to do this and give you tips on how and why dogs do the things they do.
My cavalier Ellie is from a rescue. She has a beautiful personality and is a little angel. I had never had experience of cavs until I got her, and I can truly say they are the best breed I have come across. Yes she moults, and she is tri coloured, so you cant wear anything that the hairs dont show on. I hoover everyday anyway so its not a problem, and I carry a clothes brush in my bag - i live in black!!!
She has never smelt. Not ever. She is a lady. She is bathed about once a month - more if she gets muddy. and constantly cleans herself .
I have never regretted getting her and I love her to bits.
