//Are cats OK with fireworks?

Fireworks are fun for us, but not for most cats. Like all wild animals, cats associate loud noises with danger, and will be stressed and fearful//
I have two new kittens, both 15 weeks old, and last weekend when fireworks were going off they were both up with ears pricked every time one went off. Don’t know if they were scared but they were certainly unsure as to what on earth the noise was.
Toby...5 year old rescue...was like that when they started, but then took no notice.
The horses in the field at the bottom of my garden hardly flinch when fireworks go off.
Some cats are frightened, some aren't.
Most cats and dogs can be desensitised to unusual noises and loud bangs and every responsible owner should take the time to do it - it stops them being frightened during nearby building works, thunderstorms and fireworks and makes the pets calm and happier.

The PDSA sells a desensitising CD but others are available elsewhere. It takes time and patience but is well worth the effort.

We used to have a cat who was terrified, and would try to go outside - where it would have been louder. She would start cowering even before we heard any.

We now have a very nervous little cat, who doesn't seem to notice even the loudest ones.
None of our five cats seem to bother though we shut them in for the worst fireworks. We did have a cat who used to sit on the windowsill and watch.
My two cats were 18 months old when they adopted me. I was worried that they would be scared of the fireworks as the main city fireworks display was held close to where we stayed.

As the fireworks started the pair of them raced to the window sill and watched the fireworks with great interest. I would think that, had they been outside, they would have been terrified.

The use of fireworks by the general public was discussed in parliament on 8 November - I'm still waiting to hear what the outcome was ..
Don't know about cats but my daughters dog was scared so she put her arms around him the comfort him and he bit her.
He's 10yrs old and never bitten anyone before.

One of my old cats did used to hide under the bed, but the cat I have now doesn’t seem bothered at all, thank goodness.
Still nothing in the news Barsel. I received an email about it, but there was no outcome in the email.

I suspect the dog bit because it was scared.
But is doesn't tell us the outcome does it Tills?
That debate was in the email I received.

Perhaps no news is good news, I hope so.
No, it doesn't. Maybe next year?
Funny old place, the parly. It can shut down society for months on end, demolishing the economy in the process then open and close stuff on a whim but can't stop the sale of explosives to drooling mouth-breathers with no sense, common or of decency.

One might begin to think that their collective heart wasn't in it.
Well said dougie.
In answer to your question, some dogs are frightened of cats.
with good reason!
