Worse still to know that no matter what he does he'll never have her power, her gravitas, her genius, her sheer endeavour, her courage, her sheer will. He'll never get an insult from the Russians to wear like a badge and turn into the ultimate compliment. He'll never change the world and win the cold war. He'll never walk into Moscow welcomed by a grateful Russian leader himself liberated from the horror of communism. No wonder he wants the picture taken down.
