to see Sister today when a lady followed me into the car park and said that there were like flaps collapsed under front of my car.

I thanked her for pointing it to me but can I say I never heard of flaps under all the jalopies I have had over the years.

I went home quite late after hospital and found out that because my newish car had been covered by the seller's breakdown - it had expired and so wasn't covered.  Luckily I was at home.  My neighbour's daughter and her boyfriend came over and looked at the flaps and said God Jenny that is a very common thing - it is flaps to keep out the dirt and dust from underneath.  I never heard of them.

I will add breakdown service to my insurance company on Monday but in the meantime should I bring my car to my local garage to get these flaps put up again.  What the hell are they.

Thanks for any advice.

Mud / water flaps? Common to stop spray.

well ok DrMorgan but I remember the flaps were behind the actual wheel - these are right in the middle of car (at front)

Sounds weird to me.

Doubt it'd cost much to get your favourite garage to sort, though.

What car do you have Jenny?

I think most cars have a large cover on the underside of the engine nowadays; it serves to keep the road dirt off the engine and also to smooth out the air-flow under the car to improve the fuel consumption. This cover needs to be removed for eg, oil changes, so is held in place with removable clips. It could be that a couple of the clips have come astray on your car and need to be replaced. It should be a cheap job your local garage could do whilst you wait.

Air dams to make the car more aerodynamic

Theres not a cat living under there is there. :0))))

It is imperative to keep you flaps secure, and tightly held, to stop dirt and grit entering and to prevent scraping on the road.

Togo, that made me laugh. If ever there was a double entendre.

Rubber or metal? Could be heat shields if metal.

It is worse when you are reversing Tills. The noise sounds like something dreadful is happening.
