Best to start again.

eg. I want to delete a sentence from a Word doc but I cannot always highlight the text. Holding down L click on the mouse and swiping was never a problem in the past. Sometimes only a word or a few words get highlighted, sometimes none at all.

what happens if you put your cursor in the middle of the sentence and click once, twice, or three times?

If in between two words, it highlights the word to the right. If on a word - only that word. But it is very fickle and somtimes highlights nothing.  I have tried another mouse.

I've just clicked three times, quickly, one my one-sentence previous answer and it highlighted the whole sentence. Sorry, I don't know of Word works the same way, but Open Office (which is pretty much a clone) does.

Maybe it's time to get a new mouse

If your mouse isnt doing it try using the Keyboard.  Place the curser where you want to stat, press SHIFT and then us the arrow keys.
