Why might my dog have lost his appetite?
7 Answers
Our 7 year old border collie has been off his food for the last few days.
Normally he has some cereal and milk in the morning. During the day he has a couple of 'markies' and then a can of meat + mixer at around six o'clock.
He eats his breakfast but has been un-interested in his dinner.
We have not changed his food.
He is still as lively as ever, always wanting to play and enjoys his walk in the evening.
Could there be an underlying problem?
Should we skip breakfast to see if it makes hime hungrier at night?

We have had two Springer Spaniels and both regularly did not eat for a couple of days for no apparent reason. It used to worry us a first, but after a time we got used to their foibles!.As long as your dog is lively I would not worry. One of our dogs had laryngitis (it was so quiet ,the postman thought the poor animal had died !) and did not eat for over a week. The vet said not to worry as a dog can happily go for ten days without food.
There's probably no underlying problem as he wouldn't be his normal self otherwise. One good thing about border collies is their boundless energy - you know something's up when it's not so boundless!
Try a change of food and if there's no change after a week, yes, get a vet to check him out. Good luck.

I have 3 dogs, two gsds and border collie all have different eating patterns the oldest likes two small meals a day ,the middle gsd eats every other day, and the collie just nibbles as and when,so as long as there all healthy and active i would not worry to much also i find the change to warmer weather has a effect as they do not need to store body fat as much
