where does the expression as fit as a bucher's dog come from

Err... is it not obvious? A butcher's dog would be fed on scraps of meat, and being carnivorous animals, this would be a good diet.


Not to be confused with the saying "as stick-thin and waif-like as the organic greengrocer and healthfood purveyor's dog".
