How to care for gerbils
4 Answers
We have adopted our neighbours gerbil as they didn't want it. It came with only a big wad of bedding, food and water plus a hollow log and excercise wheel in its cage. Should it have some sort of sawdust at the bottom and only a small amount of bedding? How often should we clean it out? She also only came with sunflower seeds for food. There must be other things we can give her for variety. She doesn't seem to mind being handled, but how do we know when she's had enough? Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Hi lizwizz, I have kept gerbils for a number of years, they need cleaning out once a week, they love to chew card which is also very good for their teeth. So all the boxes, toilet rolls etc can be put in the cage. Ask at the pet shop for gerbil food, they also like small amounts of carrot, cornflakes fruit etc.
Shreeded paper in their cage keeps them happy for some time then they usually make a nest with it.
Enjoy your new pet.
