Hi, i'm really worried about my Cat she is 14years old, lately she has become very quiet and fussy nagging for food then leaving it etc. she has lost a lot of weight and has been gipping a lot we thought she had a furball she couldnt get up, anyway last week my mum took her to the vet who said she had a chest infection and a furball but she might also have something underlying, she had some tablets and cream for the furball but she wouldnt eat any food so we are finding it hard to get the tablets down, we refuse to force them on her because it will cause too much distress as she is obviously not well, she is constantly asleep in front of the radiator in my mums room and can barely walk down stairs and has to be carried, she seems to not know what to do with herself, she isnt going to the toilet (but she is barely eating so i doubt that is a problem too much) my mum is taking her to the vet again today, but i'm so worried about her, has anyone else had problems like this and what was the outcome! if she is suffering we will have her put to sleep, but to me she is still young and should have a few years left in her she is normally so healthy!

Loss of weight and asking for food and then leaving it is a classic sign of kidney disease, which is unfortunately very common in elderly cats. They feel hungry, but immediately food is put in front of them the smell makes them feel sick. Does she drink a great deal because this is also a sign?

If it is kidney disease, then the vet may be able to help her with medication, although from years of experience this is a fairly short term remedy.

I sincerely hope she will be ago, and feel for you at this time.

'ago'? should have been OK!! Oh dear!

Thanks Gessoo, no she doesn't drink much at all, although she has never been a drinker! I'm going to call my mum at lunch and see how it went!
i have a 11yr old tom and he was exactly the same about 6 weeks ago the vet treat him for a kidney problem and he recovered completely, he still follows me round crying but thats because i pampered him while he was so ill, get the vet to check her thoroughly and she should be ok with some antibiotic shots
