when is the best time to mate a dog

My dog came into season 3 days ago and i want to mate her but i dont know when she will be ready to mate, anyone know the right time? thanks

The one who will know best will be the stud dog. Bitches can be ready to be mated anytime from about day 8 to day 28 - each one is different so no-one would be able to tell you exactly. The vet could do a swab test to give you an idea, but she needs to be nearly ready for it to work so you haven't really gained anything. There are also ovulation detectors but again unless you have access to the stud dog at the time it tells you then they are not much help.

What was she like on her last couple of seasons? You should be able to tell the signs and make a note of which days she is standing. Have you notified the stud dog owner that she is in?

Books can tell you the signs to look for, but at the risk of being accused of having a go at you, if you don't even know when a bitch should be mated, are you really sure you ought to be mating her? Shouldn't you find out a bit more about it first (and I don't mean by just asking on here).

Why do you want to mate her? Aren't there enough dogs in the world already looking for good homes?
