Black toad

I found a toad in the garden yesterday, about the same size as a common toad and with similar warty skin, but it was a uniform black all over. Do common toads change from their usual brown-with-black-markings, or was this something else entirely?

I believe toads have a wide variety of skin colours ranging from blackish to brown to dark green in the same way that frogs vary too. My little pond has generated a fair number of frogs over the past few years. Some are dark brown, some are lighter and we even had one which was really yellow.
