I live in Scotland, which is just up the road from England, and I once found a Common Frog in the dark when I was out for a night walk. So the Common Frog must be at least partly nocturnal, and I would assume there is no difference between the English and Scottish variants.
According to http://www.darkwave.org.uk/~caleb/ukanura.html the Toad is nocturnal.
I saw a frog on the way home a few days ago at 12:30am...
We have a thriving colony of frogs and newts in our ponds and theya re all over the courtyard in the evenings in (spring/summertime) - this may be more to do with the heat rather than nocturnal behaviour per se though
We have a multitude of frogs and newts in our pond too. They do surface during the day, but generally are more active at evening and night. I think most of the reason is that their food source is more active then also (flies, slugs, etc.) and there is less disturbance from us humans.
