Cats vs Dogs

I occurs to me that there are at least five question ins this category relating to cats and none relating to dogs - why? Is it because cats are more high maintenance and complicated ?
Given their fussiness, mugging, comforting, aversion to bad weather and apparent telepathy - who thyinks cats are better than dos and - more importantly - why?

My opinion - I love dogs - despise cats, wouldn't hurt or neglect a cat but I wouldn't trust is as far as I could throw it.

Cats do not display the same commitment, loyalty and love as a dog does.
Dogs are not fussy eaters.
Dogs do not vomit all over the place or leave semi-digested mice/birds on your doorstep
Dogs do not walk all over your kitchen worksurfaces
Cats do not help you attract women when out walking (my batchelor days)
When cats lick you, it hurts!

Thats a whole can-o-worms there. I have a cat, Poppy, who I adore while my friend has a dog, Lucy, who I cannot abide. I personally find cats have an individuality and sense of personality. Yes they can be stroppy but they can be deeply affectionate, highly intelligent and excellent company. My problem with dogs is they c**p on the pavements, they are more demanding of attention and constant praise, they lick themselves then go to lick your face, they smell, they require walkies and they adore their owners unconditionally with that stupid tongue-out expression...and here lies the crux. With a cat you must gain its respect and when you do you have an excellent companion, with a dog it loves you, your mates, your parents, the bloke next door etc....you get the point.

p.s my cat knows that if she walk on kitchen surfaces, she gets a boot up her a**e so she doesnt do it. And the dead things on doorsteps? gifts mate....and I didnt have to throw it for her to bring it to me....

I've seen close friends really fall out over this issue. It seems to me that most people are either "cat people" or "dog people". Personally, I appreciate all animals but I don't like dribbling, smelling, barking dogs in the home. One of the reasons I like cats is that they wouldn't run and fetch a stick for you. They'd say "go and fetch it yourself" (if they could speak!). They are on a higher level than dogs and they know it. Dogs are slavish pets but cats choose to live with you if it suits them. And you can train cats not to go on kitchen surfaces etc.

neither, poppy is my companion but she knows im boss most of the time.

Definately dogs - although I do like cats as well. I think that cats do things to please themselves and dogs do things to please their owners, which from a companion point of view is better. Dogs also seem to sense when you're down and try to cheer you up, where as a cat would just look at you and say 'get over it' and then lick their a*se!

I love dogs, but I do like cats, simply because they are so independent, and like you if they feel like it. My close friend has three cats, and it's taken years for one of them to deign to sit on my lap and be stroked, and I was disproportinately delighted when it happened! The difference between them? A dog will love you for ever, what ever, a cat will take a message and get back to you!

Well, at the risk of upsetting DavidUK here - I am neither a cat person or a dog person. I love them both. I have lived with a dog (my parents to be exact) and she was (and still is) very loving loyal and funny. I have lived with cats and they were intelligent, inquisitive and pleasant. Loved them all for their character and their individuality, loved them in spite of their faults (and all members both species, like all humans have many). Quite simply they are family. The reason for this subject being such a minefield is because it is the same argument as "My dad is better than your dad". Of course whatever you are arguing is correct - their yours.

I think that cats DO show commitment, loyalty and love. Its just that they don't do it until they mean it! And the food gifts are always handy for a wee pot of stew!

Well, I would like a dog. But I 'own' a cat right now. And if it was a choice I suppose I'd have to go with cats. Although there seem to have been a couple of misconceptions. My cat loves me. I know he does. And he doesn't do it blindly which I like. He knows when I'm down and tries to cheer me up. I've know dogs who walk all over the work surfaces and I can tell you they do a bunch more damage. My cat isn't a fussy eater. And if I had a pet for a companion I'd like a cat because it isn't so much a slave (bad imagery not really what I meant bu you can get the idea) as friend.

I don't think either are better than one another. But about cat's not showing respect when your sad is Bull! I was walking home seeming a bit sad and I heard a meow. a cat called Casper hoped on the wall and was looking at me with a meow. I went over to casper and I was petting him and we both seemed happy then. Dog's are fun but yet so are cats. Cat's play with the little soft leaves you move around, dog's fetch the stick. Cat's like wool, dog's like chew toys. P.S: Casper isn't the only one who cheers me up. I have at least 3/4 cat friends!! Maybe more I just normally pet in the estate!
