I've just started getting a problem with a fox coming into my back garden at night, usually i wouldn't mind but i noticed it waits for my dog to go outside so i am worried it will try to attack my dog. Is there any sort of repellent i could use that will be safe for my dog?
horeslady's given you a very good link, you've got all the info you need on it, but I thought i'd just mention, my neighbours dog has caught Mange, and the vet said it was from a Fox, so you can't be too careful.
The biggest problem with fox is mange!! they will not harm your dog, they will run away at first sight usually, just make sure there is no food left anywhere to attract them, there is a deterent you can get called Renardine at agricultural stores and some garden centres.
I've never known a fox attack a dog. We feed visiting foxes regularly at night and often find them sharing the garden with an assortment of neighbours' cats who also try to come and steal the food first. The foxes and cats ignore each other but on the one occasion we saw a fox with a scrap and a cat approach it, the fox dropped it and ran off empty handed.
But the others are right about many foxes having Mange which can spread across species, so do check your dog's coat regularly for this.
