Introducing a kitten to a resident dog

Can any one give us some tips on introducing a kitten to a dog. He is a 18 month old Jack Russell. He was used a an adult cat but she got stolen 6 months ago and since then hes been the only pet. I really wanted another cat so we got a kitten yesterday. We introduced them but the dog went mad and the kitten spat and hissed. We tried again this morning with dog on a lead and kitten was fine. The dog never took his eyes off her though. Any tips on things we can try to make this process easier.

you could try keeping the kitten in a pet cage ( that sounds so cruel doesnt it ) so that your dog can see and smell it but cant get to it. maybe after a couple of days your dog will be used to it.

Thanks, I dont think its cruel because the kitten would be safe and she could have her blanket in there and her food and water. I really want to persevere because I've always had cats and they mean 'home' to me.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago I have a two year old Weim that has had very little contact with cats and I got a kitten and crated it and did poss reinforcement training with my dog and just gave it a bit of time. It really worked my two now play very happily together and I have no worries what so ever.
specifically "dnrgnrdr" is a dog trainer so can always be relied apon to give very good advice.
