I mentioned to my gaffer that the dead leaves on the tomato plants could do with with cutting off. When I returned home later,I couldn't believe my eyes,my poor tomatoes were stood there on stems alone, she'd lopped all the the leaves off. There are about a dozen plants with approx 25 tomatoes on each. What I would like to know,is,should I pick all the green ones for chutney or something,or will they survive and ripen. Afraid i've never come across anything like this,so don't have a clue

I have done this myself in the past and the tomatoes mostly ripened OK any that didn't ripen probably wouldn't have ripened any way, the remaining green ones I made into the most delicious green tomato chutney far better than you buy.

Thanks Grannyg. In that case i'll stop tutting and mentioning my poor tomatoes to her everytime I go out back
sorry but I can't stop laughing at the image of your tomatoes in all their naked glory......as grannyg says they may ripen yet, especially if you're having this warm sunny spell where you are. You could also pick some & put them in a shallow dish on a sunny windowsill with one ripe in which helps to speed up the process.

Must admit Robinia, the poor things do look rather funny, like something a child would draw. Sunny Spell?! Well I suppose if you count yesterday and today as a sunny spell, then we're having one :) I will try and ripen a few indoors, but hopefully when I've googled,i'll find a green chutney recipe I fancy
