Yesterday I was pulling out my pups bed and blanket from his crate to wash it. I pulled his bed out first and put it on living room floor then as I was pulling his blanket out from crate my pup climbed into his bed and wee'd! He had been out to toilet about 5 mins before so it wasnt like he would have been desperate to go. Why would he climb into his bed to wee?

I've heard that dogs wont want to wet their beds unless they have nowhere else to possibly go but my pup has a big crate and his bed takes up about half of it so there's no need for him to actually pee right on his bed
Some pups might like the comfort of weeing in their bed maybe,my little Sheltie has done it on and off all her 12 years,I just make sure she has very washable bed or 2..The mum of the pups starts them off in their housetraining at about 2 weeks old when she gently pushes them away from her area and licks their tummies to help them wee, if mum wasn't too good on this the pups won't know they're not supposed to wee in the bed area.Try to watch him when he's outside to make sure he wees out there but never punish him for weeing where he's not supposed to it will just confuse him.
this might be something to with scent marking as when we used to give ours clean beds cassie would always wee in the middle of muppets now the only way round it is to give cassie a clean bed then give muppet cassies dirty one not really dirty as she only has it a week before its washed as you moved his bed perhaps he was just letting you know it was his
If your pups crate is big enough for his bed and then extra space that is probably too much space. They have crates that have dividers in them to make the space smaller. You will have to completely wash out and remove the smell from his bedding (or better yet get a new bedding) so that he wont go on it again. Frequent trips outside and praise when he does go outside should help. Also make sure the pup is fed and watered at regular times and you will know when it will need to go out.
