No, all owners of dogs should at least be sensible enough not to have those classed - or suspected of - as being dangerous around kids, which is what I assume pronpted this post. Sorry for the family and all that, but I can't help thinking some people need their heads testing. As a dog owner and lover (and a postman!), any dog can be dangerous, just some more dangerous than others.

I dont believe in this at all, most dogs who are branded as dangerous and given a very bad press you only have to look to the owners ! Those people who can never be bothered to train and give sufficient exercise to certain breeds of dog that they often buy without thinking of the breeds 'needs' and those that only buy a staffy/pit bull/rottweiler as a status symbol that says 'look how hard I am!' all dogs have a dangerous streak if provoked enough and I know some children that get too boisterous with them pulling their tails and ears - dogs can only take so much before they snap. Literally. If only they would put some people down that murder innocent people, molest children, but defenceless dogs....they dont get a say.

I disagree. I have had Rotts since 1984, (two of which were rescue ones), I have never had a problem with the breed.

They take to cats , kids, strange drunken father in laws!!

A very tolerant dog,

I now have a 10 year old Akita,,, and I have a constant battle of wits with him. He hates everyone apart from me, hubby and 2 sons...hates my daughter and would never be left alone with anyone unless I was with him.

To blame the dogs is Wrong!

I think the answer to the question has to be yes. If you have a "dangerous dog" and I hope that there aren't many people who do? and we should all know by now what breeds they are then yes these should be muzzled in a public place.
Sadly it is not just the dangerous breeds that attack. Rottys are not classed as dangerous dogs however the owners can be dangerous and this can apply to many breeds. In the particular case over the weekend, sadly the dogs weren't kept under control. What a terrible thing to have happened. It clearly serves as a warning to anyone who has guard dogs and children in the same vacinity.

Zorro - last week my giant guarding breed male dog was attacked by a Highland Terrior!! Totally unprovoked and my dog did not retaliate (I did!!!). The owner was in the pub that they manage - he/she still does not know to this day what happened! Just because dogs are small does not mean they cannot be vicious (plus they are more difficult to get hold of to drag off).

If a dog has been classed as dangerous in a court of law then they are compulsory muzzled and on a lead.

Don't see how it would have helped in the present case as the dogs were at home.

i have a german shepherd and a lhaso apso the little lhaso is a much more aggressive dog,the shepherd is a total woose,frightened of her own shadow.
when walking both dogs most people especially kids want to clap the lhaso because he is small,cute and fluffy while people seem to have a mental picture that shepherds are dangerous.totally opposite with my 2. as someone said previously the small ones can be more vicious than the gentle giants.

Oh god here we go again! I remember the last time a Rottie went for a child and all the large breeds had a bad press coverage for a while. We had a GSD at the time and when we tried to book caravan holidays that year, no site would take us because of the breed of dog we had. Of course it's dreadful when things like this happen, I can't begin to imagine what the family are going through, but don't tar all dogs with the same brush, how do you class "dangerous"? Even the mildest dog may snap if it's provoked.

was speaking to an american tourist last week who is a registered dog trainer,he was refused house insurance in america because he owns 2 german shepherds.....the companies say they would not insure him incase his house was broken into and the dogs attacked the burglar???????
if they attacked,in order to defend their masters house the insurance company could then be sued by the burglar for injuries????

2) Would anyone actually muzzle their dogs if they had a "dangerous breedd"?
3) How would it be enforced?

I take it you have never had a dog before and i think thats a very opinion.
I own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, would this be on your list of "dangerous dogs"? because i wouldnt muzzle him as i am a responable dog owner and have trained him properly.
As ive said before its the owners...why punish the dogs?
