how young can a calf possibly become pregnant?

The earliest is about 9 months. This age is dependant on the breed of cattle and some won't reach puberty until about 12 to 14 months. Interesting experiments here in the ranch land of western U.S., have shown with hormone manipulation (which causes puberty onset in all animals) heifers as young as 2 months or so can be inoduced to ovulate. However, the normal, natural production of the required hormones won't occur earlier than the ages I've included above. By the way, the earliest brreds to reach puberty are usually dairy breeds rather than beef cattle breeds...
