when its numbers have declined so much that the species is in danger of extinction.
Although generally the word 'endangered' is used to describe a species which in in danger of becoming extinct this general term can also be divided up into subcategories of conservation status. According to the IUCN these are;

Secure
Vulnerable
Endangered
Critically Endangered
Extinct in the wild
Extinct

The website which the zoo I work in uses to define these is http://www.unep-wcmc.org/species/animals/crite ria.htm#VU which I hope is helpful.
