my cat is waking me at 05.30 every morning

My cat has recently decided to wake us at stupid o'clock every morning. He does this by scratching at the bedroom carpet. He has been out for most of the prior evening, so that is not the problem. Any ideas on how to stop him doing this. Many thanks in advance for what will soon be a whole nights sleep.

Shut him in the kitchen.

I tried everything to stop my cat doing this, locking him out of the room resulted in him sitting crying for hours outside the door, a water pistol under the pillow to shoot him - ignoring him etc

The routine was broken when he went into the cattery for a week, he started sleeping all night. However his snoring kept me awake.

Since you are awake i like a tin of pennies to give a good shake. Most cats hate loud noises and he will stop.
