Staffie complaint

My staffie x alsation has had an itchy patch under her front leg for ages now. I have taken her to the vets, spent hundreds on steroids, creams, shampoos but to no avail.

Can anyone suggest an alternative treatment for this. It is driving me (and her) mad. The skin has turned blackish (vet said it was 'elephant skin) and has no fur on it. I was told it was nothing to worry about, but I would like her to stop scratching.

She has no fleas or ticks and I worm her regularly.

Is it on the front of her leg, and does she lick it often?

It obviously is something to worry about if the dog is suffering discomfort. I'd get a second oppinion if I were you!

Have you tried an anti histamine called Piriton?(Generic name is CHLORPHENAMINE)Moss chemists sell them under Allergy Relief 30tblts for�2-25 or about that.Max dose 1tblt 3times a day.could make sleepy though so adjust accordingly,eventually to just 1tab at night.its the itch scratch syndrome that makes her keep returning to it,take away the itch and she should leave it alone to return to normal!!!

Has she been tested for mites? Sarcoptic and demodex.

Is it ok to give dogs Piriton - i thought that was only for adults hay fever

I would ask your vet about Piriton, some human medicines could be dangerous to dogs ( just to be on the safe side! )

Piriton is perfectly safe to give to dogs. I have 2 staffies and one suffers from Hayfever and he gets Piriton every summer. It can be used to eliminate mild allergies, so it's worth a try in your case. Please don't just ignore the problem like your so called vet suggests.
My other staffie has an allergy to some indoor stuff that can't be alleviated so after trying all sorts like yourself my vets suggested allergy testing and we found out what it was. She now gets allergy injections on a regular basis. She started off with bald itchy pathes which are now finally starting to go away.
Skin problems is a common problem with Staffies so please either see another vet or insist on getting vet to do skin graft like Chicklin said and/or allergy testing. the latter is expensive but I'm sure your girl is worth it :-)

Thank you happy_face. I will give piriton a go. If this fails I will get a second opinion from a different vet.

My girl is definitely worth it.............she is my best friend!!! I would be lost without her...

Hey Luvlylady, how's your girl doing? Have you been able to see an improvement with using Piriton or not?

I just thought this morning that we also used some cream for our girl. It was called Skineaze and I got it from a pet shop. It's made by Johnson and at first I got it just because I wanted to add some moisture to her bald spots but it's got some great stuff in it and it really helped. Worth a try for you girl

I am still trying her with the piriton. She doesn't seem to be as bad as she was. She isn't scratching as much.
Will try the cream....does it make the fur grow back.....anything for my girl!!!!

could you send me a picture of the dog as we are getting the same typ off dog as yourself an we are not sure want she looks like as we are getting her off a freind if you dont minde me asking this thank you
