a friend of mine has a 2/3 year old rottweiler which, after numerous trips to the vets has been found to be allergic to wheat. does any one have any recommendations for a wheat free diet that would build him back up with out costing a fortune. the meal that he`s buying now is costing about 20 a week.

There are foods which are hypoallergenics.i have allways fed my dogs on james wellbeloved, its around 29-34 a bag of 15klg,you feed it dry or soaked.I personally soak it with boiling water straight from the kettle and cover with a tea towel for about 5mins untill its doubled in size. The flavours come in lamb/rice...turkey/rice.............fish/rice..and i think duck/rice.
Up to 2 yrs ago we had 4 dogs and they all had this food twice aday,so i was getting 8 meals a day from this 15klg bag and it lasted me 2 weeks. However we are down to 1 GSD now and she still has the 2 meals a day from it,i have gone down a size in bag though to 7klg as she doesnt eat as much now as she is 11yrs old.
When you divide the 30 over 2 weeks by 8 meals a day it was working out at approx 30pence a meal and they had a full dish full.If you feed it dry you reduce the amount as it WILL swell up in the tummy.
You can add veg or leftovers to this and they love it.
It comes in small kibble and adult kibble, and it is totally wheat/gluten free. You can also get 2klg bags to try.Keep me posted eh!.Regards.

I should also metion..............its a pleasure to clean up after them also,...........firmish sausages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your friend goes with james well belvd a 2klg bag should last about maybe 5-6days depending on how much she gives the dog.....and it would need introducing a little at a time anyway untill its tummy settled down. That size bag is approx 5-6 i think.Regards. Lets us know how she does.

im not nrmally this daft....i also forgot to mention that james wellblvd do a treat called crackerjacks, they are also wheat/gluten free. You have to realise nearly all dog food and treats have cereal in,in fact in the ingredients it is nearly always listed as the first ingredient..unless ofcourse it IS a hypoallergenic food.
I promise I am not on commission from this company ha ha,its just that we have always had GSD's and westies and both breeds amongst many others do have skin problems and alot of the time it can be food related. So what better way to make sure it doesnt happen in the first place. It is one of the more expensive foods however it is not the most expensive and as far as we are concerned...................we can vouch for it.
The protein level is about 21-22% and it comes in junior, adult and senior and as i said in small kibble or large kibble.
I use both and give the large (sometimes as a treat as it also cleans the teeth,(you can soak the large aswell). but also as the breaky and the main meal at teatime i use the small and always soak it and add veg to it (just left over carrots, cauli, and broccoli) if we have some.I really hope your friend gets sorted.Regards.

James Wellbeloved and Burns are definitely the best quality dog food out there. James Well beloved is stocked more widely whereas Burns is a bit more limited but on their website you can order it with free delivery and it also gives you a stockist for your area.
Both foods are non wheat, non gluten, non soya and non other stuff.
I feed both mine on Burns and although it's a bit more pricey than other run of the mill, it doesn't have loads of sh1t in it so the dogs need less and in the long run it comes to about the same in cost.
Just remember when you switch food to do it gradually to avoid upset tum tums

Hey Elmek, how is your friend's dog doing? Hope he's OK. Just to say that Jack, our Collie, is gluten-intolerant, and after a while of illness it was finally whittled down to that diagnosis. We started him on Burgess Supa Sensitive complete dry food. It's about 20 for a 15kg bag, also available at Pets at Home (not sure about other stockists). He likes it, and it lasts. A Rottie will of course need more than a Collie! But a bag does last well. They do sml bags too (2.5kg or similar) if your friend just wanted to test it out for him.
I found it really hard to pick up gluten-free treats for Jack, as there was about 3 available in the entire area!
We found a great website, Oscars, they do food too but it's a bit expensive. They have meaty treats and biscuits, which Jack loves, and you can buy in bulk as they last a year. The bigger sizes come in those takeaway-style plastic cartons, so stay fresh. They do charge for delivery if your order is less than 25, but if you have a local Oscars agent they tend not to charge you delivery, as long s you go through them.
Bit of a wordy answer I know, I just remembered how difficult it was for us at first, faced with a food bill that is more thn we pay for our own groceries!! As long as you shop around, and find something he likes, he will be back to his normal strength and size in no time. Keep us posted! Lisax
