barking dogs
5 Answers
Hi - I have 3 Jack Russell's all male (yes I know I am mad!!) and they have started to bark if any of the family get up and head for a door. It just used to be the front door, however , it is now any door.
The middle one (11 yrs) starts it, followed by the youngest (6) and then the old one who has been lovingly renamed victer meldrew (13) joins in!
Please help!

and how they work with each other. When one starts then the rest follow. We had the same with our 3 GSDs,the age between them were 2half yrs then a bro and sister togeather, boy they were a hand full but what fun!!!!!!!
The water bottle is a good thing to use UNLESS ofcourse they love water as ours did!!!!!!
The hosepipe, paddle pools, you name it they LOVED it.
We also had a 19yr old westie and they all took lessons from her also!!!!!!!!!!! when she barked the 2half then barked and then the pups thought...........ok its my turn,
However as the westie was 19yrs old any noise be it loud/soft startled her and i think sometimes it was just a startled /scared type of bark but it didnt stop the others from joining in.You try whatever it takes and still sometimes it backfires purley because you have more than one dog, obviously its alot easier when you have just one dog but if you manage to stop it then its a bonus.I guess it would be easier for you to do one at a time but if they all stay togeather then what fun you are going to have.Good luck!.Regards.

I wonder if the action of 11 year old is a top dog reaction . When a member of the family gets up to leave 'his pack' he voices his concern. Are you top dog in your household or has 11year old become leader. If you don't want to soak your room with a water spray a sealed tin with a few stones in could be thrown down each time he starts barking. I know how difficult terriers (or in my doggy circles terrorists)can be.
Just an afterthought is he going deaf?Sometimes that can be a reason for barking at inappropriate times but you do say it is only when someone gets up.

Yep!! that's terriers, they will try it on, just let them know who is top dog, and it ain't one of them!! once they know who is boss they will obey, they are very intelligent dogs, I have kept JR's for years and never had a problem, they know I am boss and I never hit one of them, train them with kindness not fear and they will be loyal forever.
Yes they can still be hard work, but they are worth every minute lol.

right it is definatley a pack thing, the hirachy of yrselfs to yr pets is wrong focus only on the ace dog (11yr old) once hes sorted the others will follow suit. Try a number of things whoever needs to b boss in yr house ie u/husband, next time its feeding do them one at a time but b4 you give the 11yr old his food stand there infront of him with his food bowl and make sure u have a crisp or sumthing in yr other hand make it look like to him that u have just taken sum of his food out of the bowl (but its really the crisp) and eat it whilst doing this make a big fuss of 'im the boss im top dog, i eat first and when im finished you eat ater me, keep repeating this every feeding time and the pecking order will slowly go back to haw it should be because he will come to realise yr top dog top dog eats first always and without you being top dog and getting the food, he wont b able to eat n will go hungry. This mite take a wile but plase perservere as i does work i have dun it myself and reccomended to a few other people who have told me it does work. hope this help you.
