Wrong section probably but someone's left the back door open here and a rat's got in from outside and hiding behind the sink. Eek! Does anyone have any ideas on how to coax him out?

A rat can go through holes as small as a walnut, and mice a biro sized hole. My speciality is really mice at which I put a tea towel in the corner of the room as they will always run towards the corner of the room. I poke a stick at said mouse and when it runs into corner it will sit in tea towel and then basically you will have to pick it up by tail and put it in a box, and then take it far far away so it doesnt come back. Failing that, stick a rat trap in behind the sink, they like chocolate best :-)
I know the rat trap thing's a shame but we caught one a little while ago that was in the garage with a humane trap. It still died. Must have been of fright being stuck in the cage. I suppose a normal trap is a bit quicker.
Our cat also brings rats and mice in to us. We didn't really have a problem until we got him. He's brought them into the house and not killed them and then they hide out inside. He doesn't bring them in now though. He leaves them under a table in the garden for us. Bless 'im.

4getmenot, if I supply you with the live rat, please can I watch you pick it up by the tail?? lol You may get away with it with a mouse, a rat will take chunks out of you, it is a sport of pastimes, being able to hold a rat up by its tail, I don't recommend trying!!
gloop, by all means put a couple of rat traps down, but you may also be advised to put down a load of rat poison as well, you are probably assuming that it is only one rat, that may not be the case, hence the poison.
Rats carry many diseases, so keep all your work surfaces extremely clean at all time, rats do not stop for a wee, it just trickles out of them as they travel around. Weils disease is potentially very dangerous and carried by 50% rats and passed on through their urine, so take the cleanliness thing seriously. If you have a dog, make sure it is up to date with its jabs, one of them is Leptospiroses, the dog form of Weils disease. They don't call me RATTER for nothing!!
Good luck!!

Marley2000. Well yes they are kinda taking over slowly, the rat population is increasing every year. The more fast food outlets, cafes and restaurants etc, sewers, rubbish dumps, food strange facilities etc, etc. the more we are providing harborages and food for these delightful creatures, the more they are increasing in numbers.
Gloop, As long as your cat cant get to the actual poison, it will be OK, cats wont eat the poison anyway, its grain based, and the poison these days will not have a secondary effect on anything that eats the poisoned rat, this is a safety measure designed with that in mind. All modern rat poisons also contain a substance called Bitrex, it is the most bitter substance known to man, this is to prevent children or even adults swallowing it, but strangely rats love it.

pcwork, Glue Traps!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the most inhumane way of catching any creature, anybody using glue traps has no moral substance at all!!!
A rat will literally become stuck to this glue covered board and I have seen legs and tails left behind where a rat has chewed its own limbs off to get away.
They should never be allowed to be used, they really are sick!!
