What is the best currency to take to north India?

Assuming you are from the UK and really want to take currency, then � sterling.

You can't import rupees, and to get $US or � is going to cost you. (All that commission free means is that commission is hidden in the exchange rate)

Debit cards in ATMs are the way to go though - you'd need to check how readily available they are in India but in cities and airports there should be no problem.

The previous answer is not strictly true - you can take Indian Rupees to India, just not a huge amount. I travel there on business every month and always take Rupees and US Dollars. I have not seen any ATMs at the airports - remember that even Delhi's international airport is nothing like in the UK. Its about the size of Stanstead but as high tech as Luton 20 years ago...
