Just be strong.....remember the good times you had with him. I know this has been going on for a while and you obviously did everything you could for him, and remember ...he had a good Mummy.
Sending you all my love and hugs

IF IT SHOULD BE
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

That poem almost made me cry too :(
I felt like that about my rabbit (some people think why a rabbit) but when theyre your pets you love them as part of the family. i felt so guilty too, but a few weeks afterwards you will realise you did the best thing you ever could for him with his best interests at heart - i promise.
My heart goes out to you x

my heart goes out to you, especially at a supposed 'happy' time of year. Don't feel any guilt, you did what had to be done for a person that you cared for and loved to bits. Nothing anybody says will help much - but you are in our thoughts.
Think of all the stupid things your dog did, the funny stuff - the things only a Lab could get up to. It does help.

Feeling for you right now RQ. You have always been strong and supportive to others when they have had problems and now its our turn to support you.
When we lose a pet some other people don't seem to understand
but those of us who have been there know exactly what you are going through.
Take heart in the fact that you did the right thing for him,
and he will have thanked you for that. The grief will turn to a sort of relief that you did not let him suffer.

I have had two dogs, both male. I lived on my own with them - they were people and friends to me. When they died I was truly devestated, more so than when my parents both died.
The dog was in your house all the time, loving you and part of your pack. He was happy and contented and made you feel good.
Be happy about the stupid things he did, he was male and he was a Lab - he was surely a bit of a clown.

Oh Bless ....cry it out ....he's had a good life and you have done the best thing you could ever do for a beloved pet . That old poem of Kipling always rings true
.
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your hearts to a dog to tear.
And tear ones heart ....they do indeed .
Take care and remember the happy times you have had with him .You have given him a good life and he wouldn't want you to be sad.

You have all be so very sympathetic - you really have, i have cried so much tonight, have a terrible headache and my face is sore, not looking forward to the morning to be honest and the routine of letting him out into the garden....and going to work and coming home to the empty house is going to be gut wrenching again....
Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart

Taking my beloved Chinchilla cat to the vet for the last time was the most gut-wrenching thing I've ever had to do - I know what you're feeling and I understand the guilty feelings too.
But you've done the kindest thing for him - that won't make you feel any better, not for a while but it will slowly get better.
I'll think of you, you have my deepest sympathy - I'm typing this with tears running down my face - your wonderful companion will always be with you, and in his own way, he's saying thank you, I love you and now I'm free from pain
Take care, my dear and treat yourself gently - you've done the best for him xx Steff xx
