what is the purpose of the question, do you have a hyperactive dog? I have never found the need to put mine anywhere other than where they choose to be, does the dog have a bed, as they do like a place they can call their own. Having said that, mine show not the slightest interest in any bed, or rug I have ever bought, other than when they are puppies, after that they use them to play tug of war or chew up.
oops, I misread the question, thought it was where you wanted to 'put' your dog not 'pet' it ! - I have always found mine to like being rubbed behind the ears, it sends them to sleep, alternatively they like their bellies rubbed!!!!!!
LOL pmjblue, I was going to answer by saying 'out in the garden' or some other smart ar*e reply, but your genuine one was even better!
Under the chin,on the forehead and gently between the eyes, up and down the backs of all 4 legs and tummy.

( All of above in a gently scratching motion )
Along the back, stroking is usually best .

What a lovely, caring question linders xxxx
A good thing to try is Rescue Remedy, if your dog is really stressed, you can get it from Holland and Carrot. But my little feller seemed to like a massage on his chest between his two front legs going round and round with your finger tips and up around his neck.
Rub the tips of the ears firmly but gently, and that should calm even the most hyper of dogs.
Our mad Dobe likes his naked bit on the inside of his thighs gently scratched lol.... and I always say 'nicely' in a gentle soothing voice..... and he just stops being so hyper for a minute or 3 and then gets in his bed and settles.....
and NO!!! don't get crude you lot lol.....
