Mr. P and me have 2 gorgeous Jack Russells that we bought a year ago for 125pds each. We've just spoken to someone who's just bought an Alsatian pup for 425 pds, Mr. P was shocked but I said this was par for the course.

Breeders have to take into account stud fees - average 300+ - and bitch may only have two puppies - my two bitches are from a litter of only two - I think average litter size is around 4 -5, if you are planning to keep one yourself, which is the reason most breeders have a litter in the first place, you would only just break even. On top of that, if the bitch has problems whelping and you have to call the vet, you have vet fees on top. Plus you have to feed puppies after they are weaned, worm them etc etc.....
You have to look at the whole picture when buying a puppy, not just going off a price. My last lab was 500, thats because she has impeccable breeding from great healthy stock, i knew what i was looking for and exactly what i wanted so i paid that price. I wouldnt have paid that price for just any pup from any litter if you see what i mean
Dont forget peppy you dont necessarily get a better dog for your money. As snappy says it depends what sort of dog or breed suits you. I personally would not pay for a pedigree and have rescues as papers and kc reg are of no importance to me. I do not show or breed and do not want a particular size or shape or breed of dog just one that is healthy and happy one to love the family. If you do not get a reputable breeder thenm you could have more inbred problems too. I always check out the local ads to gain a perspectie of how much puppies are and sometimes the small breeds are the dear ones!!
The latest fad is 'designer breeds' such as *********, or labradoodles, for which breeders charge as much as 800, when in fact all you are getting is a crossbreed. Most pedigree breeds now start at about 500, and can be as much as 1000 - 2000 for difficult to breed dogs such as Bulldogs or Pugs.
Although Jack Russells are purebred, they are not a recognised pedigree breed as such, apart from the Parson Russell Terriers, and therefore cost less, usually in the range of 150 - 250.
I would always be wary of cheap puppies of any breed, as you need to be sure the breeders have carefully bred and reared the litter, having done all health checks and chosen a suitable stud dog, rather than using the dog up the road just because it is the same breed. It is also false economy to buy a dog cheap because it has no papers, even if you do not want to breed or show it. Reputable breeders would want their dogs to be registered and carry their kennel name for everyone to see.

we paid 1000 for our sharpei that was 8 years ago, still got him, our second was a rescue shar pei from the Shar pei welfare and rescue she just cost 50 for her adoption and she is the sweetest dog ever.
My son has just paid 1860 for a bulldog puppy, but he is adorable and friends paid 2000 for a dog de bordeaux.
This is why horrible people steal dogs these days, they are easily resold at half the price.
