grand national tips
My question is simple: What will win the Grand National next Saturday.
Out of sentiment I will be putting couple of bob on "Simon," the horse owned by the widow of the winning trainer in 1956, 1961, 1970 and 1976, but that may not be so much a tip as a token of my ignorance on horses.
Did back "Lucius" in 1978, "Party Politics" in 1992 and "Amberleigh House" in 2004... and loads of good place money down the years, so looking to keep a bit of a sequence going though. (Havent worked what the sequence is yet though!). Lets have your 1-2-3-4, maybe later in the week when the list of runners is finalised.

Does age matter in the National (Mind you I did Party Politics in 1992 when all the papers said he was too old and had a broken windpipe!!). An hour or so before the race I always look to see which horse is 14-1. It has been my favourite winning and place price down the years....Good luck.
To Elvis68 and to cccaa65, I need to read up on them. The price and the placings make them worth a look.
P.S. I note nobody fancying 'little' Simon to get over the tops! Also needs the going to be soft.

I'll not back anything at less than 14/1. Simon is still my top choice with the each-way money on Billyvoddan and maybe Joes Edge, if he drifts back out. Point Barrow has failed to convince me -- yet, although it'll probably be screaming obvious by late Friday night (or worse still, screaming obvious late Saturday night).
I am not a gambler but also will not stick the wager in the pocket. Everybody I ever knew wants an "interest" in the National while it is on TV. No other sporting event manages to achieve that and this year is no different!

I've got each way bets on Bothar Na, Longshanks and Silver Birch.
According to a couple of friends, results in the last 15 years seem to favour horses between the ages of 8-10, carrying more than 11 stone in weight, who have previously won over distances greater than 3 and a half miles.
I picked my horses by names and odds and subsequntly found all three fit the above criteria!

Hi scubadiver - Silver Birch is a new name for the list. I know very little of it.
I did a ready reckoner on one of the betting websites and assumed the going would be 'good.' it came up with Joes Edge....which may or may not be a runner!
I will narrow the field to five for myself, two highly fancied and three seeking to obtain place money. An outsider witg a good price finishing in the first four or five might be as good as having than the winner. I have not changed my mind (yet!) about Simon as my strongest fancy.
