Does anyone know of an insect that makes a beeping noise (similar to a smoke alarm battery needing replacement) at night?

Almost sure that it's a Field Cricket, raggedyann.

Noisy little devil, isn't it, but if you can, try and feel priviliged as these insects are getting rarer? We had one in our garden about 10 years ago and it stayed for 3 nights.......

Just to be certain, here's a recording. You will need to scroll almost down to the bottom of the page till you reach it.
Sorry, forgot the link:

thanks cetti - it is actually a work colleague who hears this so will pass the info on
Question Author
have played this to the person concerned and it is not the noise he is hearing - any more thoughts anyone???
Did he check his smoke alarm? Wasn't the timer on his cooker was it? Just a thought.
Have them check the call of the Scops Owl on the first page of that link.
Did your friend listen to the second Field Cricket sound as well as the first as they both sound very different?

Ok, the Cricket has been ruled out. Now I know you said insect, but some birds make a 'bleep' sound at night - could it be a bird, do you think?
Question Author
unlikely to be a bird - he was out with a torch on the ground and it seemed to be coming from a gravel pathway - but I will get him to listen to the owl sound next week
thanks for all your thoughts
have a great bank holiday break
raggedyann ~~ I am sure that your friend will find a similar, if not the same, call in the link given by Cetti.

My feeling is, that it is one of the many species of cricket or cicada (Christmas Beetle) although I am not so sure the latter insect is found in the Northern Hemisphere. I have only heard them in the tropics.
Cetti ~~ Thanks for that great link.
Yes what a good link. I reckon it might be a bat.

The insect chrips are about 30 to 45 seconds apart. It is in my bedroom at night and I can't seem to find where it is coming from.
Rcurtis: have you found out what that insect is? I have one too and it is diving me insane!!!! Your YouTube recording is the only exact information I've been able to find. I need the thing to go. Wakes me up every night
its the rio grande chirping frog
