my cat was hit by a car and fractured his pelvis in the first week of March, he was unders strict cage rest for 6 weeks so it would heel properly etc, he was in that and he has been kept in as we was told this by the vet, now it's time he can go out he goes out and it looks like he panics and runs back in and hides.
is there anyway i can train him to like the outdoors again?

I think you have to give him time, after his trauma hes bound to be frightened give him plenty of tlc and leave him to decide when the time is right.good luck and Im pleased hes on the mend.

thanks i just get very worried about him he used to love being outdoors, i walk to the train station every morning and he would follow me up until the main road and watch me until i was out of sight and then go. he's far too scared to do any of that
You know it might be a good thing,if you are near a main road they are danger zones for our poor cats.

i walk a good ten minutes before we get near a main road i didnt want to be close to a main road for that purpose. i think its because we have a garage onthe back of our house as does everyone so it's like a car park
My daughter had the same problem with her cat.She bought a cat harness and lead then took him for short walks to begin with. After a week on the way home she took off the lead and once he gained confidence he went out on his own, but he doesn't stay out for long like he used to.
Just Work Your Way Towards it.
Hold some treats outside or something.
And make sure he's comfy!
And soon enough he'll probably be outside again like normal.
(:
OMG...how can you let him follow you like that to a busy main road...and a train station...I can't believe it.Perhaps I am daft but I have 3 cats and if I went to work I would leave them in the house all day where I know they would be safe. They are'nt allowed out at night...in well before dark in winter and if I need to go out I get them in before I go. Suppose people will laugh at the above but I'd sooner be safe than sorry. Please keep him safe.
Hi,
my mums cat was also hit by a car about a year ago which resulted in him having a hip replacement. Anyway after a couple of months bed rest he was finally allowed back outside but he was extremely scared. All we could do was to try and coax him to go out and do things such as sit in the back garden with him and walk him around the garden in our arms (bless him). He always was a bit of a wimp before the accident but since the accident he has got worse although he will go outside now. However, he never really goes that far (as soon as you call him he appears) and like moonshadows cat he doesn't stay out for aslong as he use to.
Hope your cat plucks up the courage soon and all you can do is to encourage him as gently as possible.

he doesnt follow me the whole way to the train station i have a ten/fiftenn minute walk and then go through a alley between two houses to the main road he will come that far and then he goes back, we have a cat flap in our back door and in our garage so both of my cats can get in and out as they please, cats need their freedom and there's not much i can do about him following me as when i'm indoors he follows me everywhere even when i have a bath or shower he will wait outside the bathroom
