Do seagulls nest in pairs?
3 Answers
I'ne noticed that two gulls have made very makeshift nests on a flat roof I look on to. They never appear to leave their eggs for one moment, but for a lot of the time two other gulls stand on the roof, close by, for hours on end. Are these the mates? do they bring the mother food? They fly away for short periods but ive not seen them on their return. Tried Wiki but no answer to this question there.

They tend to mate for life and return to the same nesting site year after year. They are very diligent parents- taking it in turn to incubate the eggs. One will feed whilst the other is incubating and if there is an abundance of food then the off duty bird will tend to idle around near the nest. Both parents will feed the young when they hatch. The young peck at the red spot on the nderside of the adults beak which stimulates them to regurgitate partly digested food.
Yes,the bane of my life.... they are the equivalent of foxes for raiding bins, stealing food from the barbeque or sandwiches out of your hands, poohing everywhere, squawking all through the night on my roof, even walking into my kitchen and helping themselves to the cats food....God forbid if you try to rescue a fledgling which has fallen out of the nest... Its worse than a scene from "The Birds" They gather in their hundreds and attack anyone who dares to near the stranded chick.
Guess what ? Its nesting season here !!!!!

oh the dreaded seagulls! i happen to live near the seasideand our street seems to be like the local seagull housing association. i give up washing my car in the summer and also if i dare open the velux window when ones on the roof you are treated to the rallying fight song of an angry bird, followed by an ariel assault of swooping at a window. i hate seagulls, why can't the live actually in the sea or maybe in cliffs? are you allowed to "remove" there nests or is it a crime? i cannot handle another season of fledglings squeeling all day and night on my roof?
