pheasant squawk

I have a pheasant and a female that come into my garden. I often hear him squawk in that (not particularly pleasant) way that pheasants do!
Recently however I have started to notice him making a noise which is far less severe - more like a call. He seems to do a call and then a double one and then a single again. Could this mean that he has young somewhere in the area? He was doing it for a good 20 minutes a few days ago and both the male and female had their heads up and looking around.
Thanks,
