any abers own one of these beauties, watched dog borstal last night and just wanted one yet again, previously saw them at crufts, thinking about getting one, can anyone one tell me the positives and the negatives about getting one!

large, hairy, require regular grooming. Love water....and mud!! large appetites, not easily trained, need a firm hand as they can push you over, devoted family pets. Are slobbery, they dribble, not for the house proud, and not for someone who is at work full time.

All the above + you need a bigger car (small van) to transport one, they are nose height to the cooker and work surfaces, they need their own living room (and settee) and if one does not want to do something/go somewhere you have problems!! (Just try picking one up when he throws himself on the ground!)

Plus giant dogs usually have a shorter life span.

Again all of the above, intelligent working dogs (like so many) so if not stimulated can cause problems. I heard they have webbed toes they love water so much, water rescue is what they were bred to do so I read. Gorgeous dogs but big dogs gat big problems (and vets bills).

Need stimulation and work. If not well trained can prove to be difficult. I have known two who actualy went for their owner when they didn't want to do as they were told. Not for the novice dog owner.

Contact a breeder and ask if you can visit them - you will then be able to see first hand how they cope with all the hair and slobber, having to clean the walls several times a day and how much mud they can bring in. You will also be able to see what its like not being able to sit on the settee because the dog is taking up all the room, and they will be able to tell you lots more reasons for not having one - plus several reasons for getting one if you feel you can cope!

thanks everyone for your replies, my mind is made up due to your comments, i wont be getting one in the near future, no one posted any positives, will go for a rescue dog when the time comes!!!!
