Does anyone know exactly why dogs have that thumping paw reflex when their ears/belly is scratched?

Hi cackaloo. I used to have a labrador and my wife had a boxer. Both of them had that reflex. So would you if you were being tickled. The labrador had a ticklish tummy and the boxer was ticklish behind the ears
