The pongy smell is only when they spray. Normally they have a musky odour similar to weasels, stoats etc. which is the family they below to.

Apparantly they make excellent pets and are a lot more appealing than even a cat.
A tame skunk never sprays, unless it is extremely provoked.

Just thought I'd add that having skunks de-scented is banned in this country and you will be lucky to find a vet that will do the operation.
