In a book which calls itself a thesaurus of things everyday and esotoic it says:..........The English language contains a huge number of collective nouns for animals. Many are colourful and unusual, often deriving from the tradition of giving poetic titles to beasts & birds which were hunted for food - a sounder of boar. Some are fanciful plays upon the characteristics of the animal - a prickle of porcupines.Others describe the animals' behaviour - an ambush of tigers. Yet others are lyrical - an exultation of larks. But despite the number and variety of collective nouns, few are compulsory, and many of the old fashioned ones are seldom used nowadays. It is quite acceptable to use words such as 'herd' to describe groups of many animals, 'flock' for most birds and 'school' for many species of fish or equatic fishlike mammal.
